CME Group to Launch First-Ever Baseball Futures Contracts Oct. 12
CME Group will debut the world's first Baseball futures on October 12, tied to performance indexes built on official league data.
CME Group, the world's largest derivatives marketplace, announced Wednesday it will introduce the first Baseball futures contracts in history on October 12, pending regulatory clearance. The Chicago-based exchange said the new products will be based on its CME FutureSports Performance Indexes, which draw on Official League Data.
The launch marks a significant expansion of sports-linked financial instruments into America's national pastime. CME has previously developed futures tied to other sporting metrics, and the move into baseball extends that effort with standardized, data-driven contracts designed to attract both institutional and sophisticated retail participants.

The FutureSports Performance Indexes underlying the contracts are constructed from official statistical feeds, lending credibility and consistency to the pricing mechanism. By anchoring contract values to verified league data, CME aims to ensure transparency and reduce the potential for manipulation that could arise from less regulated data sources.
The October 12 target date positions the products to go live during the Major League Baseball postseason, one of the sport's highest-profile periods, potentially generating early market interest and trading volume. Full activation of the contracts remains contingent on final regulatory approval.
